Muhammad Yaqub Ali (March 1912 to 5 August 1994) was the eighth Chief Justice of Pakistan, serving from 1 November 1975 to 22 September 1977. Born in Jalandhar, he earned a law degree from the University of Punjab in 1936, began practice at the Lahore High Court in 1948, and was elevated to the High Court bench in 1955 and the Supreme Court in 1965. As Chief Justice he led Pakistan's delegation to the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea in 1976. A strong advocate of democratic principles, he was forced into retirement by General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq in 1977 and afterward devoted himself to social work in education.
