Mohammed Bedjaoui, born in 1929, is an Algerian diplomat and jurist who served as a Judge of the International Court of Justice from March 1982 to September 2001, presiding over the court from 1994 to 1997. His career included serving as legal adviser to Algeria National Liberation Front from 1956 to 1962, Minister of Justice from 1964 to 1970, Ambassador to France from 1970 to 1979, Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1979 to 1982, President of Algeria Constitutional Council from 2002 to 2005, and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2005 to 2007. His scholarly work examined the historical and conceptual relationship between colonialism and international law.
