Mohamed Suffian bin Mohamed Hashim, widely known as Tun Suffian, served as Lord President of the Federal Court of Malaysia from 1974 to 1982 after earlier serving as Chief Justice of Malaya. A Cambridge-trained barrister who returned to Malaysia in 1948 as a Deputy Public Prosecutor, he helped draft the Federal Constitution and other founding legal documents of independent Malaysia. He was known as a defender of judicial independence and wrote several books explaining the Malaysian constitution in plain language for readers outside the courts and universities, and in 1975 he received the Ramon Magsaysay Award.
