Luis Roberto Barroso, born in 1958, served as a Justice of Brazil Supreme Federal Court from 26 June 2013 to 18 October 2025, appointed by President Dilma Rousseff, and as President of the Court from 28 September 2023 to 29 September 2025. He is known for liberal and progressive judicial positions, including votes on the legalization of abortion in cases of rape and the criminalization of homophobia and transphobia in Brazil. He earned a law degree from Rio de Janeiro State University in 1980, a masters degree from Yale Law School in 1987, and a doctorate in public law from Rio de Janeiro State University in 2008, and has taught constitutional law as a tenured professor at Rio de Janeiro State University while lecturing at institutions including Harvard Law School, New York University School of Law, the London School of Economics and Oxford University.
