Joseph Unger was an Austrian legal scholar and statesman, born in 1828 and died in 1913 in Vienna. His System des Oesterreichischen Allgemeinen Privatrechts, published from 1856 to 1864, became a standard work on Austrian civil law and established his scholarly reputation, and alongside his academic career at the University of Vienna from 1857 he entered Austria's legislative bodies in 1867, served as a minister without portfolio, and was appointed president of the Reichsgericht, Austria's supreme administrative court, in 1881.
