Jose Luis Bustamante y Rivero, who lived from January 15, 1894, in Arequipa, Peru, to January 11, 1989, in Lima, was a Peruvian lawyer, writer, politician and diplomat who served as President of Peru from 1945 until his overthrow in 1948, during which he established Peru's 200 nautical mile maritime sovereignty doctrine. He later served as a senator for life from 1980 to 1989 and mediated the Football War border conflict between El Salvador and Honduras in 1969. He was a judge of the International Court of Justice, serving as the court's president from 1967 to 1970, and died in Lima just four days before his 95th birthday.
