John Westlake lived from February 4, 1828 to April 14, 1913 and was an English law scholar, Liberal member of Parliament and social reformer. He co-founded the first journal devoted to international law, the Revue de Droit International et de Legislation Comparee, and was renowned for his influence on legal practice addressing disputes between individuals residing in distinct legal jurisdictions, a field commonly known as private international law or conflict of laws.
