John Glover Roberts Jr. was born on January 27, 1955, in Buffalo, New York, and has served as the 17th chief justice of the United States since 2005, nominated by President George W. Bush. He built a leading Supreme Court appellate practice as a private attorney, arguing 39 cases before the Court, and served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit before his elevation, at age fifty becoming the youngest chief justice since John Marshall. Regarded as an institutionalist with a moderate conservative judicial philosophy, he has authored major opinions including National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius, which upheld most of the Affordable Care Act, and Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard, which overruled race based college admissions programs, and he presided over Donald Trumps first impeachment trial in the Senate.
