John Paul Stevens

John Paul Stevens was born on April 20, 1920, in Chicago, and died on July 16, 2019, at age ninety nine, then the longest lived justice in Supreme Court history. He served as an associate justice from 1975 to 2010, nominated by President Gerald Ford to fill the seat vacated by Justice William O. Douglas, and became the second oldest and fourth longest serving justice in the Courts history. Though a lifelong registered Republican who identified as a conservative, he was regarded as part of the Courts liberal wing by the time of his retirement, and after Chief Justice William Rehnquists death in 2005 he briefly served as acting chief justice before John Robertss confirmation. His majority opinions include Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council, Kelo v. City of New London and Massachusetts v. Environmental Protection Agency, and he is equally known for dissents in Texas v. Johnson, Bush v. Gore, District of Columbia v. Heller and Citizens United v. FEC.
