Sir Gilbert John Baptist Muria, born in 1953, was the first indigenous Solomon Islander to serve as Chief Justice of Solomon Islands, holding that office from 1992 to 2003. He went on to serve as a judge of the High Court of Sierra Leone and a justice of its Court of Appeal and Supreme Court from 2003 to 2006, then as a justice of the Supreme Court of Belize from 2007 to 2010. He served as Chief Justice of the High Court of Kiribati from 2011 to 2020 and has served as a judge of the High Court of Tuvalu since 2021. He has also served as Chancellor of the Solomon Islands National University.
