John L. Murray (1943-2023) was an Irish judge who served as Chief Justice of Ireland from 2004 to 2011. Born in Limerick and educated at University College Dublin and King's Inns, he qualified as a barrister in 1967 and built a commercial, civil and constitutional law practice before serving twice as Attorney General of Ireland, in 1982 and from 1987 to 1991, then as a judge of the European Court of Justice from 1992 to 1999 and a Supreme Court judge from 1999 to 2015. He later served as Chancellor of the University of Limerick from 2013, and died in 2023.
