John Erskine Read was a Canadian lawyer, legal academic and civil servant who became the only Canadian judge ever elected to the International Court of Justice, serving on the court from 1946 to 1958. Born on 5 July 1888 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, he served as the third dean of Dalhousie Law School from 1924 to 1929 before moving into the Canadian federal civil service. He died on 23 December 1973 in Toronto, Ontario.
