Johannes Schober was an Austrian jurist, law enforcement official, and politician. He was appointed Vienna chief of police in 1918 and became the founding president of Interpol in 1923, holding both positions until his death. He served as chancellor of Austria from June 1921 to May 1922 and again from September 1929 to September 1930, and held ten separate stints as acting minister across the education, finance, commerce, foreign affairs, justice, and interior portfolios, sometimes for only days or weeks at a time. He was elected to the National Council leading a coalition of the Greater German People's Party and the Landbund late in his career but never formally joined a political party, and remained Austria's only chancellor with no official ideological affiliation until 2019.
