Johann Christiaan Kriegler served as a justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa from 1995 to 2002, one of the eleven judges sworn in when the court's first bench was established, after a career at the Johannesburg bar and on the Transvaal Provincial Division and Appellate Division. He chaired South Africa's Independent Electoral Commission from 1993 and oversaw the country's first universal-suffrage elections in April 1994, later chairing the permanent Electoral Commission of South Africa until 1999. He was also the founding chairperson of Lawyers for Human Rights and later founded Freedom Under Law.
