Gilmar Ferreira Mendes, born December 30, 1955, is a Brazilian jurist who has served as a justice of the Supremo Tribunal Federal, Brazil's Supreme Federal Court, since June 20, 2002, and previously served as its president from 2008 to 2010. He was Attorney General of the Union from 2000 to 2002 and earlier held positions with the Superior Electoral Court and National Justice Council, holding law degrees from the University of Brasilia and a doctorate from the University of Munster in Germany.
