What did Tobias Asser do to codify private international law?

He presided over the Hague conferences that produced treaties on civil procedure and family law.

Asser presided over international conferences at The Hague that tried to agree common rules on conflicts between national laws. The first two, held in 1893 and 1894, drew up a treaty that was made effective in May 1899 and set a uniform international procedure for conducting civil trials. He also presided over the conferences of 1900 and 1904, which produced treaties on international family law, covering marriage, divorce, legal separation and guardianship of minors.
