Elena Kagan

Elena Kagan was born on April 28, 1960, and raised in New York City, and has served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States since 2010, nominated by President Barack Obama to succeed Justice John Paul Stevens; she is the fourth woman to serve on the Court. She began her career as a law professor at the University of Chicago, later served as an adviser in the Clinton White House, and became the first female dean of Harvard Law School before being named the first female solicitor general of the United States in 2009. As of her appointment she was the most recent justice named to the Court without prior judicial experience. She favored a consensus building approach on the bench until the conservative supermajority moved to overturn Roe v. Wade, has written majority opinions in cases such as Kisor v. Wilkie, and is known for pointed dissents including in West Virginia v. EPA and Janus v. AFSCME.
