Eduardo Jimenez de Arechaga, who lived from 1918 to April 5, 1994, was a Uruguayan professor and jurist born in Montevideo who taught public international law at the Montevideo Law School from 1946 to 1969. He served as a member of the United Nations International Law Commission from 1960 to 1969, acting as its president in 1963. He was a judge of the International Court of Justice from 1970 to 1979, serving as the court's president from 1976 to 1979, and he died in Punta del Este, Uruguay, following a car accident.
