Demetrios Chomatenos was a Byzantine priest and judge who served as Eastern Orthodox Archbishop of Ohrid from 1216 to 1236. His comprehensive legal education let him act as judge, arbiter, confessor and advisor to the Byzantine imperial house at a time when judicial authority was passing from weakened secular rulers to the church. He was among the last practicing jurists still fully versed in the laws of Justinian as recovered during the Macedonian legal renaissance, and his court at Ohrid was known as a rare center of legal stability in an unsettled era.
