Bruno Simma, born in 1941, is a German jurist who served as a Judge of the International Court of Justice from 2003 to 2012. Before his ICJ appointment he was a member of the United Nations International Law Commission from 1996 to 2002, a member of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights from 1987 to 1996, and Dean of the Faculty of Law at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich from 1995 to 1997. He is the editor of The Charter of the United Nations: A Commentary, regarded as the primary English-language reference work on the UN Charter, has authored roughly one hundred twenty publications on international law, and has served as an arbitrator in international disputes, including as third-country arbitrator on the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal from 2013.
