Brett Michael Kavanaugh was born on February 12, 1965, and has served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States since 2018, nominated by President Donald Trump to fill the seat vacated by Justice Anthony Kennedy, for whom he had once clerked. Before joining the Supreme Court he served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit from 2006 to 2018 and worked as staff secretary to President George W. Bush, having earlier assisted independent counsel Kenneth Starrs investigation of President Bill Clinton. His Senate confirmation was contested after Christine Blasey Ford and other women accused him of past sexual misconduct, allegations he denied and that were not corroborated by eyewitness testimony; the Senate confirmed him 50 to 48. Since Ruth Bader Ginsburgs death in 2020 he has come to be regarded as a swing vote on the Court.
