Brenda Marjorie Hale, Baroness Hale of Richmond, became the first woman to serve as President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, holding that office from 2017 to 2020 after having been the only woman appointed a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary in 2004 and later Deputy President of the Supreme Court from 2013 to 2017. As President she led the unanimous Supreme Court ruling that Prime Minister Boris Johnson's prorogation of Parliament in September 2019 was unlawful. Earlier in her career she was the first woman and the youngest person appointed to the Law Commission, in 1984, and her judgments, particularly in family law and women's rights cases, are noted for attention to the impact of the law on the most vulnerable.
