Al-Hasan ibn Ali al-Barbahari was a Hanbali Sunni Muslim theologian and jurist from Iraq, active in the tenth and eleventh centuries. He played a leading role in the Sunni struggle against Shia missionary activity of his time and successfully opposed the spread of Mu'tazilism within the Abbasid Caliphate, becoming one of the most forceful early exponents of Hanbali legal and theological doctrine. His writings sharply condemned the Shia, Qadaris, and Mu'tazilis, and he has been linked to sectarian violence and pogroms in tenth century Baghdad; the historian Michael Cook has described him as a manifest demagogue.
