Adomnan, also known as Adamnan of Iona or Eunan (circa 624 to 704), was abbot of Iona Abbey from 679 to 704, a hagiographer, statesman, canon jurist and saint. He authored the Life of Columba (Vita Columbae), written between about 697 and 700 and described as the most important surviving work written in early medieval Scotland. In 697, at the Synod of Birr, he promulgated the Cain Adomnain, literally the Law of Adomnan, a set of laws designed to guarantee the safety and immunity of various types of noncombatants in warfare, which earned it the alternate name Lex Innocentium, the Law of Innocents.
