He served as Senior Legal Advisor to the British Foreign Office from 1953 to 1960, as a member of the International Law Commission from 1955 to 1960, as a judge of the International Court of Justice from 1960 to 1973, as a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration from 1964 to 1973, and as a judge of the European Court of Human Rights from 1974 to 1980.
