Julia Sebutinde was born on February 28, 1954 and is a Ugandan jurist who has served as a judge of the International Court of Justice since March 2012, currently serving her second term following her re-election on November 12, 2020. She is the first African woman to sit on the International Court of Justice. Before her election to the court she was a judge of the Special Court for Sierra Leone, appointed to that position in 2007, and she is also chancellor of Muteesa I Royal University, owned by the Buganda kingdom. On February 6, 2024, Sebutinde was elected Vice-President of the International Court of Justice, and on January 14, 2025 she became acting president upon the resignation of president Nawaf Salam, serving in that role until Yuji Iwasawas election as president on March 3, 2025.
