Alphons Orie

Alphonsus Alphons Martinus Maria Orie is a Dutch jurist, born in 1947, who specialized in criminal law. He graduated in law from Leiden University in 1971, worked as a lecturer in criminal law, and was admitted to the Dutch bar in 1980 before being appointed to the Supreme Court of the Netherlands in 1997. In 2001 he was elected a judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, where he served until 2017, presiding over Trial Chamber I and hearing high-profile war crimes cases including the trials of Ratko Mladic and Ante Gotovina. Since 2012 he has also served as a judge of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals.
