The Unified Patent Court is a common supranational patent court of 18 member states of the European Union, which opened on 1 June 2023. It hears infringement and revocation proceedings concerning European patents, both regular ones that were not opted out and unitary patents, and one ruling applies directly in every member state that has ratified the UPC Agreement. That agreement was signed in February 2013 by 25 states, all then-EU members except Spain, Poland and Croatia, and entered into force once three conditions were met on 1 June 2023. The United Kingdom ratified but withdrew in 2020 after Brexit. The court has a Court of First Instance, whose central division sits in Paris with thematic sections in Munich and Milan, a Court of Appeal in Luxembourg, an Arbitration and Mediation Center and a common Registry.
