The Supreme Court of Justice of Costa Rica is the highest body of the country's judiciary. It is formed by the magistrates needed for good service, who are elected by the Legislative Assembly, and the Assembly sets up the chambers that the law indicates. Magistrates are elected for a period of eight years by the votes of two thirds of all the members of the Legislative Assembly, and the court names its own president from the list of magistrates who make it up. The full court, known as the Corte Plena, is presided over by that president and consists of all the magistrates who sit in the chambers, including the substitutes who temporarily replace them, and it draws the lots that choose which substitute magistrates replace the titular ones.
