Karnataka High Court

Intermediate Appellate Courts

The High Court of Karnataka, commonly called the Karnataka High Court and formerly the Mysore High Court, is the highest judicial authority of the Indian state of Karnataka. Its principal bench sits in Bengaluru, in a red brick building known as the Attara Kacheri, with permanent additional benches at Hubballi-Dharwad and Kalaburagi that began operating in August 2013 after circuit benches were opened in 2008. The court consists of a Chief Justice and other judges appointed by the President of India, with a sanctioned strength of 62. It has superintendence over every court and tribunal in the state except those of the armed forces, hears appeals from the district-level civil and sessions courts, is a court of record able to punish contempt of itself, and its own judgments are appealable to the Supreme Court of India. The Attara Kacheri building dates from 1864 to 1868, and a public interest litigation filed in 1982 against its planned demolition was the first ever filed in the court.
