Court of Appeal for Ontario

Intermediate Appellate Courts

The Court of Appeal for Ontario is the appellate court for the province of Ontario, Canada, and is often wrongly called the Ontario Court of Appeal. Its seat is Osgoode Hall in downtown Toronto, which is also the home of the Law Society of Ontario and the Divisional Court of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. The court has 22 judicial seats plus several supernumerary justices and is led by the Chief Justice of Ontario. It hears more than 1,500 appeals a year across private law, constitutional law, criminal law and administrative law. Appeals from it go to the Supreme Court of Canada, but that court takes fewer than three percent of its decisions, so in practice the Court of Appeal is the last avenue of appeal for most Ontario litigants.
