The judicial system of Lebanon is based on the Napoleonic Code, placing it within the civil law tradition, and its ordinary courts run through three tiers: courts of first instance, courts of appeal sitting in each governorate, and a nine chamber Court of Cassation. Alongside these sit a Constitutional Council that reviews the constitutionality of laws, a Supreme Council that hears charges against the president and prime minister, and military courts with jurisdiction over civilians in espionage, treason, and security matters. A distinctive feature is a system of religious courts with jurisdiction over personal status matters, marriage, divorce, and inheritance, within their own communities under sect specific laws, and Lebanese trials do not use juries.
