Nawaf Abdallah Salim Salam, born December 15, 1953, in Beirut, is a Lebanese jurist, diplomat and academic. He holds a doctorate in history from the Sorbonne, a doctorate in political science from Sciences Po, and a Master of Laws from Harvard Law School, and taught at the American University of Beirut and Sorbonne University while maintaining a legal practice. He served as Lebanon's ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations from 2007 to 2017, holding the presidency of the Security Council in 2010 and 2011 and serving as a Vice-President of the General Assembly from 2012 to 2013. Elected a judge of the International Court of Justice in November 2017, he became its President on February 6, 2024, the second Arab and first Lebanese judge to hold the office, resigning on January 14, 2025, after his nomination as Prime Minister of Lebanon, an office he has held since February 8, 2025.
