The Indonesian Penal Code, known in Indonesian as the Kitab Undang-Undang Hukum Pidana or KUHP, was the foundational body of criminal law regulations for Indonesia. It descended from Dutch colonial law, specifically the Wetboek van Strafrecht voor Nederlands-Indie, ratified in the State Gazette of 1915 and taking effect on January 1, 1918, while Indonesia was still a Dutch colony. After Indonesian independence in 1945 the colonial code was retained and enforced with modifications removing outdated provisions, under the transitional provisions of the 1945 Constitution, and its application was extended nationwide on September 20, 1958 by Law No. 73 of 1958. Indonesia's Parliament approved a new criminal code built on decolonization principles on December 6, 2022, and the old code was formally repealed on January 2, 2026 when the new 2023 Indonesian Penal Code took its place.
