First Geneva Convention

International and Human Rights Instruments

The First Geneva Convention, formally the Geneva Convention (I) for the Amelioration of the Condition of the Wounded in Armies in the Field and also known as Geneva Convention I or GCI, is the first of the four treaties of the 1949 Geneva Conventions. Its subject is the care of wounded members of armed forces in the field. The convention is described as defining the basis on which rest the rules of international law for the protection of the victims of armed conflicts, which places it at the foundation of modern international humanitarian law and makes it a standard reference point for the later conventions in the same series.
