William Rehnquist lived from 1924 to 2005 and served on the Supreme Court of the United States for thirty-three years, first as an Associate Justice from 1972 and then, after nomination by President Reagan, as the sixteenth Chief Justice of the United States from 1986 until his death. A former law clerk to Justice Robert Jackson, he was known for advancing a jurisprudence of federalism that limited the reach of federal power over the states, and he presided over the 1999 impeachment trial of President Clinton and the Court's decision in Bush v.
