What part did William R. Day play in ending the Spanish-American War?
Day left the State Department to lead the United States Peace Commission and signed the treaty ending the war in Paris.
Day was Secretary of State when he left that post, after about five months in it, to lead the United States Peace Commission formed to negotiate an end to the war with Spain. He had argued that the Spanish colonies other than Cuba should be returned to Spain, but President McKinley decided that the United States should take control of the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Guam. Day negotiated peace on McKinley's terms and led the commission to Paris, where he signed the treaty ending the war. John Hay then succeeded him at the Department of State.
