Admiralty and Maritime Courts

Admiralty and Maritime Courts gathers the courts of first instance dedicated to admiralty and maritime law: disputes over shipping, salvage, maritime commerce and offenses committed at sea, historically including the vice admiralty courts that colonial powers established in overseas territories to hear exactly this kind of case. Admiralty law's own distinct body of doctrine, much of it international in origin, is the same rationale that separates every court in this group from a general jurisdiction trial court.
