The Supreme Administrative Court of Sweden, in Swedish Högsta förvaltningsdomstolen and before 2011 Regeringsrätten, is the supreme court and the third and final tier for administrative court cases in Sweden. It stands in parallel with the Supreme Court of Sweden, which is the highest court for criminal and civil cases. It hears cases decided by one of the four administrative courts of appeal, and leave to appeal is normally granted only when a case is of interest as a precedent. Most of its caseload concerns taxation and social security. The court was founded in 1909, having been handled before that by the Supreme Court, and it has no fewer than fourteen justices appointed by the government, one of whom serves as its president. The institution is independent of the Riksdag and the government cannot interfere with its decisions. Since 2011 it has sat on Riddarholmen in Stockholm, in the former Administrative Court of Appeal building and the Sparre Palace.
