Drug courts in Australia

Drug courts operate in five Australian states: New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia. They offer an alternative to conventional criminal proceedings for defendants whose offending is connected to drug dependency, focusing on treatment rather than punishment for those who qualify. People who come before an Australian drug court often do not meet the eligibility rules of the states' other pre-court diversion programs, which is part of why the courts were created as a separate track.
