Meghalaya High Court

The High Court of Meghalaya is the high court of the Indian state of Meghalaya, sitting at Shillong. It was created as a separate court for the state with effect from 23 March 2013 under the North Eastern Areas (Reorganization) Act, 1971 as amended by the related laws amendment of 2012, and was inaugurated on 25 March 2013 by the then Chief Justice of India, Altamas Kabir, in its new building. Before that, Meghalaya was served first by the High Court of Assam, set up in 1948, and then by the common Gauhati High Court that the 1971 Act established for the north eastern states, whose Permanent Bench at Shillong was inaugurated under an order of 1995. The court therefore stands as the newest successor in a line of courts stretching back to the Assam High Court of 1948, and it serves a state that attained statehood on 21 January 1972.
