Basic Law: Human Dignity and Liberty, enacted by Israel's Knesset on March 17, 1992, is one of Israel's constitutional Basic Laws and protects life, body, dignity, property, personal liberty, freedom of movement, and privacy. It carries a form of super-legal status that lets Israel's Supreme Court strike down ordinary legislation that conflicts with it, a power the Court used as early as 1999 when it voided a provision of the Military Adjudication Law. Before 1992 Israel had no statutory bill of rights, and this law's enactment alongside Basic Law: Freedom of Occupation the same year is often described as the start of Israel's constitutional revolution, even though the law does not explicitly protect equality, freedom of religion, or freedom of speech, which the Supreme Court continues to derive from case law instead.
