The Equality Act 2010 received royal assent on 8 April 2010 during the Brown government, with its various provisions coming into force at different later dates. It consolidates and updates a number of earlier British anti-discrimination statutes, including the Equal Pay Act 1970, the Sex Discrimination Act 1975, the Race Relations Act 1976 and the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, along with separate regulations covering sexual orientation, age and religion or belief. The act protects against discrimination, harassment and victimization based on nine characteristics: age, disability, sex, sexual orientation, marriage and civil partnership, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, race, and religion or belief. Its protections extend across employment and both private and public services, and in some respects go beyond European Union Equal Treatment Directives by also covering discrimination based on nationality and citizenship.
