Argentina's Law 26,618, the Equal Marriage Law, amended the country's Civil Code to allow marriage between people of the same sex, changing Article 172 so marriage carries the same requirements and effects regardless of whether the spouses are of the same or different sex. It passed the Chamber of Deputies on May 5, 2010 and the Senate on July 15, 2010, was signed by President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, and took effect on July 22, 2010. Argentina became the first country in Latin America and the tenth in the world to legalize same-sex marriage, and the law also opened marriage-based adoption to same-sex couples.
