Kris (Romani court)

Krisi, also called Krisi-Romani, is a traditional court for resolving disputes within the culture of the Vlax branch of the Romani people. Its name comes from the Greek word for judgment, and it serves as a key institution for enforcing the Romani Code within Romanipen. It developed in the area of present-day Romania during the period of Romani slavery there, as a judicial institution meant to enforce community cohesion and internal balance. After the abolition of Romani slavery in the mid nineteenth century, Vlax Romani communities carried the krisi with them as they emigrated around the world, and some non-Vlax Romani groups, such as the Drzara of Sweden, later adopted the institution through contact with local Kalderash communities.
