Patna High Court

Intermediate Appellate Courts

The High Court of Judicature at Patna, commonly called the Patna High Court, is the High Court of the state of Bihar, India, and is based in Patna, the state's administrative capital. It was established on 3 February 1916 under British colonial rule, which makes it one of the oldest High Courts of India. A proclamation setting it up was issued by the governor-general on 22 March 1912, the foundation stone of its building was laid on 1 December 1913, and official work began on 1 March 1916 under Sir Edward Maynard Des Champs Chamier as first chief justice. Until 26 July 1948 it also had jurisdiction over Orissa, and its Ranchi circuit bench, opened in 1972, became the separate Jharkhand High Court in November 2000 under the Bihar Reorganisation Act, 2000. It has given India two chief justices, Bhuvneshwar Prasad Sinha and Lalit Mohan Sharma.
