Appellate Courts are the intermediate tier of a court hierarchy: courts whose main work is hearing appeals from trial courts and other lower tribunals, checking whether the law was applied correctly rather than trying a case from the start. In a three-level system they sit between the trial courts and the court of last resort, and their decisions can usually be taken further to the highest court. This tier gathers courts of appeal, circuit courts of appeal, district courts of appeal and similar second-instance courts, whichever subcategory of the atlas they are shelved in.
