The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia is the highest court in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia judiciary, established under a 2007 royal decree issued by King Abdullah that restructured the country court system. Abdulrahman Al Kelya was appointed its first chief justice in 2009. The court ordinary role is to monitor the correct application and interpretation of law in verdicts issued by the courts of appeal and to rule on requests to reconsider those verdicts, while it also sits as a trial court in hudud cases, the category of crimes carrying fixed criminal penalties under Saudi law.
