Supreme Court of Lithuania

The Supreme Court of the Republic of Lithuania is Lithuania only court of cassation, reviewing final judgments and rulings passed by courts hearing criminal cases at first instance and on appeal, and by courts of appeal in civil cases. Established on 25 October 1992 and operational from 1994, it sits in Vilnius with thirty seven judges divided into a Civil Division and a Criminal Division, ordinarily hearing cases in three judge panels with more complex matters going to seven judge extended panels or the full court. Judges are appointed by the President of Lithuania with the consent of the Seimas and serve for life, subject to mandatory retirement at sixty five.
