New York Court of Appeals

The New York Court of Appeals is the highest court in the Unified Court System of the State of New York, established in 1847 and seated in Albany. It is composed of a chief judge and six associate judges, each appointed by the governor and confirmed by the state senate to fourteen-year terms, and the chief judge also heads the administration of the entire state court system. New York's naming is unusual among American states: its trial-level courts are called the Supreme Court, while its highest court is the Court of Appeals, and its members are called judges rather than justices, the reverse of the more common national pattern.
